Supporting Home Learning
The EEF have conducted research into the most effective ways parents can support their child’s learning at home.
-
For younger children, reading at home with them is central to supporting their learning. For tips and information about reading with your child click here.
-
Help your child to use technology to support their learning and stay safe online. – See our technical guides and online safety resources
-
Talk to your child about their learning, what they are reading, and about what they are doing online. Showing an interest in these things is powerful.
-
Help your child to develop a good routine and set up a place for them to work at home to help them to engage in their home learning.
-
For older children, support them to manage their time, efforts and emotions. This is more effective than helping with individual tasks as it will help them to develop the skills they need to manage their work longer term and be more independent
-
Resist giving too much help with completing the work itself. It is important for teachers to know how well your child is understanding the work independently. It is better that you give the support and encouragement for them to do their best, and remind them to speak to their teachers if they need help. Sometimes teachers will set assessments to complete at home. It is really important that your child does these without help so the teacher can plan the support they need moving forwards.
